K9 TEAM PHOTOThe El Segundo PD K-9 unit started in 1981 and since then we’ve had 18 canine teams, including our two current teams.

Our current teams consist of Officer Alex Leavitt and his partner Roxy and Officer Rudolph and his partner Xena. Roxy and Xena have the unique distinction of being the first ever female canines at El Segundo PD.

Officer Leavitt has been a police officer for eight years and a K-9 handler for four years. Roxy is a seven year old Belgian Malinois from Holland and Officer Leavitt had to learn Dutch commands to communicate with her. Officer Rudolph has been a Police Officer for ten years and a K-9 handler for one year.  Xena is a three year old Belgian Malinois from Czechoslovakia and Officer Rudolph had to learn Czechoslovakian commands to communicate with her.

Roxy and Xena are trained to find suspects who are hiding from the police and to bite them if necessary.  They are also trained to find items, which suspects have hidden from the police or citizens have lost. Roxy has also been trained locate hidden narcotics, including cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, ecstasy and marijuana. Xena will receive training in the near future to locate hidden narcotics. Roxy and Xena go home with Officers Leavitt and Rudolph every night and live at their houses with him. Roxy enjoys playing with Officer Leavitt’s personal dog on her days off and Xena enjoys chasing birds in the yard on her days off.
